Let's Talk / Me Kōrero

Host a Let's Talk Workshop

When was the last time you thought about or had a conversation about family or sexual violence? It’s not something most of us talk about often, but perhaps it should be. Let’s Talk/Me Kōrero is an invitation to be courageous and have those conversations. Because what sustains violence more than anything is isolation and stigma.

In a Let's Talk Workshop, you will be invited to have discussions around family violence and sexual violence guided by a trained Aviva facilitator. Here are some of the questions you may be asked:

  • How would you support a family member, friend or colleague who was experiencing family violence?
  • Why don't people in abusive relationships just leave?
  • What does a healthy relationship look like to you?

You can host a Let's Talk Workshop at your workplace, event, or community group. Email ✉community@aviva.org.nz for more information or to request a speaker.

Are you an Upstander or a Bystander?

An upstander is someone who notices the casual sexism, the jokes that make your stomach churn, and the behaviours and attitudes that contribute to sexual harm – and does something about it. A bystander, on the other hand, sees the same thing but doesn’t step in.

Aviva recently developed the Upstander Conversation Cards to help people change from bystanders to upstanders.

These cards present everyday scenarios alongside a range of possible responses – some good, some not so good, and some in between, because we’re all human. The idea is to get people thinking about their own beliefs and what being an upstander looks like in real life. People can also jump online to stopit.nz/quiz to test their responses and get feedback on whether their choices might prevent or perpetuate harm.

You can email ✉community@aviva.org.nz to request your own Upstander cards. Further “Asking for it… to stop” resources are available for free from the website stopit.nz.
